Author introduction

Wallace Stegner wrote friendship as seriously as most novelists write romance. Crossing to Safety follows two couples across decades of ambition, illness, and loyalty, and it is one of the titles our longest-standing members recommend most often.

His landscapes are precise, his moral attention is patient, and his endings ask more of a reader than they announce.

What do readers underline?

The passages about work, marriage, and the slow arithmetic of gratitude.

Slow, and right to be

The first hundred pages are deliberately uneventful and I nearly stopped. I am glad I did not. By the end the ordinariness is the entire argument of the book.

I picked this up because of the group read and it turned into the best reading month I have had all year. The characters kept surfacing while I was doing dishes, which is my only real test for a book.
