Author introduction

Kathryn Stockett writes in overlapping voices, letting a household reveal a society. The Help remains one of the most discussed historical selections our members have carried through a full group reading block.

Discussion around her work in the Nook tends to run long, because readers arrive with strong and genuinely different readings.

Meet the author

Why does the group keep returning to this novel?

Because it puts three narrators in one kitchen and lets the reader decide who is being honest.

What makes it a good club read?

It is generous with story and difficult with questions. That combination keeps a room talking.

The most humid thriller I have read

I read this in two nights, which is unusual for me. What stayed with me was not the twist but the interview scenes. Every conversation is two people protecting somebody who is not in the room.

I picked this up because of the group read and it turned into the best reading month I have had all year. The characters kept surfacing while I was doing dishes, which is my only real test for a book.
