Author introduction

J.D. Salinger occupies the legacy shelf for a voice that changed how American fiction sounds on the page. Members reread The Catcher in the Rye at very different ages and report entirely different books each time.

Our discussions of his work usually become discussions about the reader, which is exactly why we keep scheduling him.

Why keep it on the shelf?

Because a first-person voice this specific is still rare, and still teaching writers how to be heard.

What changes on a reread?

Your sympathy. It moves, and where it moves says a great deal about you.

I copied four poems into my notebook

This is the collection I have been handing to people all season. Short, plain, and completely undefended. The kitchen poems in particular felt like reading my own family out loud.

I picked this up because of the group read and it turned into the best reading month I have had all year. The characters kept surfacing while I was doing dishes, which is my only real test for a book.
